About us

Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation is one of the oldest research institutions in Europe. It was officially established in Warsaw in 1926, although its roots date back to 1918. For over 90 years of its activity, the scientists and constructors working at the Institute have brought outstanding contributions to the development of the Polish economy and defense.

Currently, the Institute provides the highest quality research and development services for local and global industrial partners from the aviation and space sectors. The Institute operates 30 specialized laboratories, including the largest wind tunnel in Central and Eastern Europe. Currently, the Institute employs 1,250 people.

Strategic research areas

  • Designing and testing aircraft structures with particular emphasis on materials and structures.
  • Space technologies, with particular emphasis on technologies for rocket engines and remote sensing.
  • Unmanned aerial vehicle technologies, with particular emphasis on autonomy and security.

Important dates

  • 2000 – commencement of strategic cooperation with General Electric, on the basis of which the Engineering Design Center design office was established in the Institute.
  • 2004 – under an offset agreement concluded with Pratt&Whitney, a Materials and Structures Research Center was established in the Institute.
  • 2019 – joining  the Łukasiewicz Research Network which includes 38 Polish research institutes.

Structure

The Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation is divided into seven substantive divisions which correspond to the needs and real areas of activity:

  • Materials and Structures Research Center provides services in the field of testing materials and structures subject to high mechanical and thermal loads. A significant number of certified homogeneous stands puts it in the first place in Poland.
  • Center of New Technologies implements large innovative projects in cooperation with partners of the European Union. It specializes in light aviation.
  • Center for Composite Technologies  provides solutions and conducts tests in the field of composite materials for the aviation industry.
  • Center of Space Technologies conducts research in the field of aircraft propulsion, space technologies, data acquisition and processing.
  • Center of Transportation and Energy Conversion conducts research and development work in the field of energy conversion and accumulation technologies and in areas related to means of transport.
  • Engineering Design Center cooperates in a strategic partnership with General Electric. It specializes in expertise and research and development in the field of aircraft jet engines and related fields.
  • Engineering Services Center provides engineering services in the area of analysis and construction as well as research and development works for corporate clients under long-term cooperation agreements.
